blueberry varieties & cross-pollination

Postby heardclarke » Fri Jan 30, 2009 9:52 am

Hello, I recently moved from North TX to Greenville, SC (piedmont area). I am eager to try blueberries, as they were impossible in the alkaline soil we had in TX. I have a few "Sunshine Blue" Southern Highbush plants already that are doing fine. I'd like to add a larger type but do not want giant sized berries. Flavor is more important. I understand that Rabbiteye varieties need to cross-pollinate. I have a Tifblue. Can anyone recommend a second variety?

I'd second the recommendation for "climax" -- great flavor, prolific producer. I'm about to order a few more of them...they're doing well here in my NC garden.

In Spartanburg, I'm growing Climax, Tifblue, Jubilee and Oneal. No apparent problems.
