a friend gave me a kiwi plant last year, it grew beauitfully, no flowers so I'm assuming its a male, problem is she didn't plant them so she doesn't
know what kind they are, we are a zone 6 and her fruit is close to regular size and fuzzy, none of those seem to be from our zone, does anyone
have a clue or idea? thanks Brenda

Male kiwis set flowers, as well as females. For actinidia deliciosa (fuzzy kiwis) the female will set fruit without the male, but the fruit will not fill out. The plants also need to be trellised, and pruned. Edible Landscaping has care guides online. Other sources of info online too. Only females make fruit. If your vine came from a vine that is making fruit, then it's female. Zone 6 is pretty cool for fuzzy kiwis. Are your sure the parent vine had fuzzy fruit, and not small smooth fruit (which would make it a hardy kiwi)?

We know the Elmwood is a fuzzy female but is not self fertile. Alexis may have found the one in Charlottesville but that is the only one I know of that has proven to be self fertile. All of our fuzzy female need the male also. Michael
