Apple Liberty Surround

Surround ® WP Organic Spray

Peaches, plums, apples, cherries, apricots, pears and nectarines usually need at least two sprays of Surround after the flower petals fall off the tree and two weeks later. These timely sprays will keep worms and/or larvae such as plum curculio, oriental fruit moths, and codling moths from your fruit. Surround protects with a cover of clay that prevents insects from laying eggs on your fruit. This spray is a major celebration for gardeners who wish to grow organically delicious, tree ripened fruit in the Roseacious family. It works on Japanese Beetles, too. Talk about a safe spray! It's actually edible! OMRI listed crop protectant. (The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) is a national nonprofit organization that determines which input products are allowed for use in organic production and processing. OMRI Listed or Approved products may be used on operations that are certified organic under the USDA National Organic Program. ) The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of a minor use label expansion for Surround WP Crop Protectant (kaolin) for reduction in damage from leafhoppers on dry beans, potatoes, carrots, strawberries, raspberries and leafy vegetables (crop group 4, including celery, lettuce, parsley and spinach) in Canada.

Surround®

Most of our fruiting plants need no sprays for insect related damage on their fruits. For peaches, apricots, apples, plums, cherries and pears may we suggest Surround®? Surround® coats fruit with a clay that weathers well and adheres to fruit until it is washed off at harvest. Applied with a sprayer the clay film acts as a preventative on major insect pests including, plum cucurlio, apple maggot, codling moth, aphids, Japanese beetles, pear psylla, leafhoppers and leaf rollers. It is not destructive to beneficial insects. Spraying Surround® is safe and it works. The environment stays healthy and so does the gardener. Use ½ lb to a gallon of water. (i.e. a ½ gallon of mixture will spray a full size peach tree).
5 lbs $22, 25 lbs $60

From the makers of Surround® WP
General information: Surround® WP protectant forms a mineral-based particle film intended for protection of agricultural crops. When Surround® WP is applied to plants, a dry white film results. The Surround® WP barrier will help reduce the damage to plants and crops caused by certain insects, mites, disease, and environmental stresses such as solar effects. This product may be used as the primary component in a pest management system that utilizes supplementary compatible pesticides.

Plant Response Precautions:Lack of adheasion or film formation on foliage or fruit may indicate spray incompatibility with the plant surface of previously applied materials. Ensure that plant leaf and fruit surfaces are day before applying or poor adheasion or film formation will occur.
Do Not Spray where a visible white film is undesirable or cannot be washed off!

For Non-Agitating Sprayer Tanks, Such as Backpack Sprayers the following mixing sequence must be followed:
- Use Surround® WP powder 1 cup per 1 gallon of water.
- While stirring or swirling, slowly add Surround® WP powder into ¼ to ½ of the water that will be used in the batch.
- Mix thoroughly by shaking the closed container vigorously for 30 seconds.
- Add tank-mix pesticides, if any.
- Add the remainder of the batch water and shake for an additional 30 seconds.
- Shake the sprayer occasionally during application.
- At the end of the application, spray until empty and flush system and nozzles with fresh water.
- Properly dispose of rinse water.

Compatibility:Most other insecticides, miticides, and fungicides do not generally affect Surround® WP. However, the user should test tank-mixes before use. When mixing with other products, make up a small batch and observe slurry and film characteristics. Curdling, precipitation, lack of film formation, or changes is viscosity are signs of incompatibility. Do not tank-mix with sulfur or Bordeaux mixture fungicides. Always add tank-mix pesticides after the Surround® WP powder has been added. Use of anti-foaming agents is not recommended. Do not tank-mix with other mineral particulate products like diatomaceous earth. Applications of Surround® WP over such products or over-sprays of such products over Surround® WP are not recommended, as post-harvest wash-off may be impaired.

The use of additional spreader/stickers is not recommended. Products that specify other spreader/stickers should not be tank-mixed with Surround® WP.

If other adjuvants are used in conjunction with Surround® WP, poor coverage or adhesion may result reducing the efficacy of the product. Use of adjuvants not approved by Engelhard are not recommended.

General Application Guidelines:
Coverage: Use sufficient spray volume to obtain through coverage. For optimal performance applications must coat all portions of plant that are to be protected. Including both sides of the leaves.

Applications can be made with any commercial air blast or high-pressure sprayer that provides enough air turbulence to coat both sides of the leaves, bark, and fruit.

Plant Color Change:All plant surfaces must turn a hazy white color after drying. Additional treatments will turn the plant surfaces a deeper white. This is normal and is indicative of appropriate film formation. Generally, two or more coatings are required for complete coverage and for establishment of the foundation of the protective barrier.

Foliage Dryness: Apply only to dry foliage. Do not apply to wet foliage, or poor coverage and adhesion will result.

Droplet Size: Nozzles that produce a fine spray are recommended when Surround® WP is used under normal temperature and humidity conditions. Under very hot and dry conditions, nozzles that produce a coarser spray and larger volumes may be necessary. Otherwise, the product may dry before it contacts the foliage and will result in poor film formation.

Spray Methods: Air blast or high-pressure sprayers are required. Observe specific crop label instructions for directions regarding spray volume. Calibrate spray equipment per equipment manufacturer to deliver the required volume. The flow rate of the product is similar to water. Use strainers in the spray system behind each nozzle per normal practice.

Reapplication: Reapplication is generally required every 7-14 days. Intervals can be widened to 14 to 21 days later in the season when new growth diminishes.

When the dry foliage has lost its white appearance, reapplication is necessary: Heavy rainfall, new growth, and wind erosion will affect film quality. Reapply to re-establish coverage after heavy rain as soon as the foliage is dry. However, reapplication may not be necessary if all target surfaces remain thoroughly coated. Excessively thick coatings are not recommended.
