Saffron Crocus Care Guide
Crocus sativus
An autumn blooming crocus usually flowers in October and November in zones 7 - 8. Crocus sativus is the saffron crocus, which has been in cultivation since the times of ancient Hebrews for its value as a spice and coloring agent. The flowers are a rich purple grow 4 inches high.
When planting crocus naturalization is the ticket. The best place for them is under deciduous trees, at the edge of wild gardens, the edge of walkways, beneath shrubbery, on banks, and in the rock garden or in a part of the lawn that you can let alone until the leaves die back. It should be noted that ants are especially fond of the seed coatis of the colchicum and often help in naturalizing the flowers without the gardeners help.
Plant crocus 3 to 4 inches deep (from the top of the corm) and space them 6 inches apart on center. After they have naturalized and if they become crowded, do not divide them until flowers start to diminish.
Sometimes saffron crocus will live in the colder climates when given heavy mulch, but it is usually best to grow them in zone 7 - 9.
Be sure to protect your crocus bulbs from rodents. Squirrels will steal the bulbs if not protected. Usually about 1/4" hardware cloth (wire) will keep them from digging down and taking them.
The bulbs are also extremely susceptible to rot during the dormant season (late spring thru summer).
We do not guarantee saffron crocus bulbs since rot and rodents are the most common problems.
