Shiitake Mushroom Log

Lentinus edodes

We send an oak log 42" long ready to transform, when conditions are right, into shiitake mushrooms. The log continues fruiting for 4 years. Logs can be completely covered with shiitake. Easy growing instructions are sent with the log. Basically the log is placed in dappled shade, watered regularly, and nature does the rest. It should be noted Shiitake logs are not like growing a plant. They will not produce unless they have ideal conditions. Logs have fruited before they are ever delivered to us, so we know they are viable. Logs will not fruit if to cold or to hot. Care guide included.

Shiitake Mushroom Log Care Guide

Your shiitake mushroom log should produce mushrooms from May - October with a little TLC (tender loving care).

Place your log in a shaded area (out of direct sunlite), preferably out of the wind and off the ground 2" or 3". (cinder block or brick works well). It must be in an area where it can get naural rain (not under a patio deck). After the first spring flush of mushrooms which happens naturally, the log then may be forced to produce mushrooms on a 6 to 8 week cycle, by soaking the log in a container of water for a period of 8 to 24 hours. The time frame for soaking depends on how wet the log is from natural rain, the wetter the log, the less time for soaking. Remove from the water and shake the log up by thumping it on its end with a hammer or dropping it on one end on the ground. (not hard enough to knock the bark off). By doing this we feel the mycelium gets broken up and begins growing again with more vigor. After thumping the log return it to its stand and cover it with clear plastic to retain the moisture. The log should pin and fruit within 5 to 7 days. Pick while still partially cupped. After the mushrooms have been harvested the log should be allowed to rest for 6 to 8 weeks before forcing again.

The temperature for producing mushrooms should be nights 60's and daytime 80's. When the temperature gets in the high 90's THEY WILL NOT PRODUCE.

If there is no rain for 2 or 3 weeks sprinkle log to maintain moisture content, they will not produce if not enough moisture. Your logs will produce mushrooms for 5 or 6 years with a little TLC.
