Magnolia Vine Care Guide

(Schizandra chinensis)

Native to the forest of Northern china and the Russian far East, this beautiful deciduous hardy vine has been highly valued by the indigenous peoples of these regions for centuries. Bearing small lightly fragrant magnolia-like flowers, it produces striking crimson berries which have a
tart and very specific taste and aroma. Sweetened, they make unique juice and preserves. The dried leaves, shoots and roots are used to make a refreshing tea. High in vitamin C, micro-elements, essential oils and shizandrin, a stimulating and healthful compound.

Culture Site and Soil
Magnolia vine grows well in both sun and shade, although in hotter climates, some shade is recommended. Moist fairly well drained soil is preferred.

Pollination
Some plants have either male or female flowers and require the opposite sex for pollination. Our variety, has flowers of both sexes and should bear fruit without another variety.

Pest and Diseases
No problems have been observed.

Pruning
Magnolia vine needs support to grow well. A fence, arbor or trellis will provide good support and room to train the vine. Once form is established, pruning is only necessary to remove dead or broken branches or to thin out excessively dense areas.

Hardiness: minus 25*F/Minus 32*C (zone 4)

Omija-cha (Omija means 5 flavors, cha means tea)a refreshing sweet-sour drink
· ½ cup of dried Schizandra chinensis berries
· 5 cups of water
· ½ cup sugar

1. Wash the berries, then soak them overnight in 2 cups of room temperature water.
2. Strain and discard the berries, saving the flavored liquid.
3. In a saucepan combine the remaining 3 cups of water with the sugar and bring to a boil.
4. Cool the sugar syrup to room temperature and then combine it with the flavored liquid & refrigerate.
5. Add sugar to taste (some people prefer 1 cup of sugar to 5 cups of water, but that is too sweet for me!).

Traditionally Omija is served with a few pine nuts floating in it. Other optional ingredients include slices of Asian pear, or watermelon juice.
