Punica granatum – DK from Shevlan Pomegranate
DK from Shevlan is a pomegranate from the Garrygala Agricultural Station, Shevlan Site and was selected by Dr. Gregory Levin as one of the most cold-hardy pomegranates in his collection. It is part of the Group A group of pomegranates, along with Kazake and Kaj-acik-anor. These varieties were recognized for their exceptional cold hardiness and potential for use in breeding cold-hardy pomegranates.
The Shevlan collection is particularly interesting because Turkmenistan is home to a wide diversity of pomegranates. DK from Shevlan is also preserved in the USDA National Plant Germplasm System as accession DPUN 99.
DK from Shevlan is primarily of interest to growers looking for a cold-hardy pomegranate and to those interested in preserving and growing unusual pomegranate genetics. Published information on its fruiting characteristics is limited, so fruit production, flavor, and ripening may vary with growing conditions.
Zone hardiness is to be determined, but estimated 7 - 9, 6 with wind protection.
