Juglans ailantifolia – Heartnut

An easy-to-grow, spreading tree with abundant foliage and large, sweet nuts that crack easily into halves. Sweeter and easier to crack than black walnut, Heartnut is also a more attractive shade tree with a broad, graceful habit. It bears early and is highly cold-hardy.

While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to Walnut Bunch Disease in the deep South, particularly in Zone 8. However, after 15 years of growing Heartnuts, we have not observed this issue in our orchards. Recommended spacing is 20' to 35'. Suitable for Zones 5-8.
