Vitus labrusca L. - Moored Grape

The Moored grape was named and released by Virginia Tech as part of their grape breeding program, which was initiated by Professor Robert C. Moore over sixty years ago. It is the second variety developed through this program. The grape was named "Moored" in honor of Professor Moore’s many years of service to the program in fruit breeding at Virginia Tech.

This variety is excellent for juice and fresh eating, offering a sweet flavor with muscat undertones. It ripens earlier than the Concord grape and is red in color. Recommended spacing for planting is 10-12 feet on a 6-foot wire trellis. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5-8.

Parent Varieties: 'Fredonia' and 'Athens'
The cross was made in 1949, and the original vine bore fruit in 1953. It was selected for propagation in 1956 after further observation, particularly for its resistance to the black rot fungus, which was prevalent that year. VT 26 was the assigned selection number, and prior to his retirement in 1964, Professor Moore recommended that it be considered for naming and introduction.
