Malus spp. – Hewes Crabapple (Virginia Crabapple)

The Hewes Crabapple, also known as the Virginia Crabapple, is hardy in USDA Zones 5-9. It produces small, dark green fruit with white and purplish-red dots. The flavor is crisp, firm, acidic, and astringent. Primarily used for cider, it can also be made into crabapple jelly.

Pollination:
This variety is a good pollinator for other apple trees that bloom mid-season.

History & Characteristics:
Discovered in Virginia in 1817, the Hewes Crabapple is a cross between a North American wild crabapple and European varieties. It was a favorite of both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Partly self-fertile.

Mature Size:
12-16 ft.

Storage:
Keeps well in cold storage.
