Hewes Crabapple, also known as Virginia Crabapple, is a hardy, historic crabapple that produces small, dark green fruit marked with white and purplish-red dots. Fruit is crisp, firm, acidic, and astringent, making it especially well suited for cider and crabapple jelly. Keeps well in cold storage.
Discovered in Virginia in 1817, Hewes Crabapple is believed to be a cross between a North American wild crabapple and European varieties. It was a favorite of both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. A good mid-season pollinator for other apple varieties and partly self-fertile.
