Malus spp. – Stayman Winesap Apple
Due to import restrictions we are unable to ship Apples to CA.
Stayman Winesap is a dependable, long-lived apple that can produce usable crops even with little care. Older trees in our area that receive minimal maintenance continue to produce fruit, although they may develop an alternate-bearing habit with heavy crops every other year. Trees are quite hardy and resistant, similar to Arkansas Black.
The fruit can be very large, with a crisp texture and tart-mild flavor. Ripens in early fall and can soften fairly quickly at room temperature, but will keep for about 6 weeks in the refrigerator. Excellent for fresh eating, juicing, and cider blends. A favorite roadside market apple in Virginia. Developed in 1866 from a seedling in Leavenworth, Kansas.
Stayman does not pollinate other apple varieties, so plant with two different apple varieties nearby for reliable cross-pollination. Approximately 800 chill hours required. Zone 5–8.
