Gaultheria procumbens (Wintergreen)
The Berry Cascade variety of Gaultheria procumbens produces an abundance of berries along the entire length of the stem, creating a beautiful cascading effect. In summer, delicate, bell-like white flowers bloom, followed by a profusion of vibrant berries that persist through spring. The new growth in spring emerges with a striking orange-red hue, which holds its color for several months. As winter approaches, the foliage turns a rich burgundy, providing seasonal interest.
This plant is ideal for mixed containers, especially during the holiday season, but it also makes an excellent groundcover in hardscape settings. Gaultheria procumbens prefers partial shade and well-drained, blueberry-type soil enriched with bark and peat. It is also a pollinator and wildlife-friendly plant.
