Ziziphus jujuba (G-A 866)

G-A 866 produces shiny, reddish-brown, date-like fruit with a sweet apple flavor. Known for its remarkably high sugar content, the fruit resembles dates when candied and dried. It can also be made into delicious ice cream. The fruit is about 1.5 to 2 inches long, plump, and elongated, ripening around the same time as Lang in mid to late September. This variety requires hot summers for the fruit to ripen and thrives in desert climates.

With its attractive shiny leaves and rugged, picturesque bark, it’s a standout from the Chico, CA research program. It reaches a mature height and spread of 15-20 feet, and is cold-hardy to Zone 5.
