Prunus tomentosa (Gabe)

Gabe is the sweetest of all Nanking cherries. It’s a hardy bush variety, producing above-average-sized fruit for its type. Best grown in full sun, it can be used as a foundation plant or a fruitful hedge. It can also be grown in a container. Note that it is not always self-fertile, so planting two is recommended to ensure fruit set.

  • Hardiness: Tolerates a variety of conditions but thrives in full sun.
  • Height: 4' - 8'
  • Spacing: 6' circle
  • Zones: 3-7
  • Fruit: Best Nanking strain for fresh eating, with three distinct stock plants—Gabe #1, Ian #2, and Jules #3. For cross-pollination, plant a red Nanking or a different white Nanking alongside.

  • Heat Tolerance: Good (Ian White Nanking tolerates 100°F+ heat in Texas)
