Lonicera kamtschatica (Honeyberry/Haskap)

Honeyberry, also known as Edible Honeysuckle or Haskap, is a hardy, compact shrub that produces some of the first fruits to ripen at the nursery. These European bushes thrive in colder climates and are very resilient. While the flowers are not as showy or aromatic as those of the honeysuckle vine, the fruits are small, blue, and flavorful, ripening even before strawberries.

The fruit is tart yet sweet, with a flavor profile combining the sweetness of black raspberries and the tang of blueberries. The Tundra variety, in particular, is known for its large, aromatic fruit, with an average weight of 1.5 grams per berry. It boasts excellent flavor, rated highly among all named cultivars. The berries’ attractive shape, light blue color, and size make them a visual delight.

Though the plant is easy to care for, it can be a shy producer in areas prone to late frosts. Lonicera kamtschatica is well-suited for a variety of landscapes and grows to a height of 4-5 feet, with a spread of 4 feet.
