A grand ornamental tree with distinct fan-shaped leaves, Ginkgo biloba is the oldest cultivated nut tree. Male ginkgo do not produce fruit but are required for the female to produce nuts..
Fossil evidence shows that Ginkgo trees have been growing on Earth for over 150 million years, outliving even the dinosaurs. In autumn, the leaves turn a striking aspen yellow. Ginkgo trees can reach heights of up to 30 feet in full sun within 40 years. Some 200-year-old specimens are enormous, with trunks so wide that 3–4 people holding hands can encircle them.
Female Ginkgo trees do not produce pollen, and both male and female trees are required for fruit production. Male trees, which do not bear fruit, are often used as street trees. Zones: 5–8
