Asimina triloba - Overleese
Overleese is a classic pawpaw variety selected from the wild by W. B. Ward in Rushville, Indiana in 1950, and remains a favorite among backyard growers. It produces medium to large, oval to round fruit with few seeds and excellent flavor. Overleese is also a parent of several improved cultivars, including Peterson’s Shenandoah.
The fruit is of exceptional quality with a very good seed-to-flesh ratio and good keeping ability. It ripens early, typically in early September in Kentucky and the first week of October in Michigan. Average fruit size exceeds 170 grams, with trees producing around 55 fruits per tree under good conditions. Overleese was awarded “Best Fruit” at the Ohio Pawpaw Festival in 2011.
