The 'Contender' peach is a delicious, sweet, and juicy freestone variety. It produces medium to large peaches, perfect for freezing and canning. Known for blooming late and being bud-hardy, this variety offers consistent, large crop yields and is ideal for northern climates. It is very cold-hardy and resistant to bacterial spot, thriving in USDA Hardiness Zones 4-8.

A cross between Summercrest and Redhaven, 'Contender' was released in 1987 by the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. The trees produce non-showy blossoms, with the harvest season typically starting from August 8 to August 15. The fruit is attractive, with a yellow flesh and a good size (2.5 to 3.0 inches in diameter). Seventy-five to ninety percent of the surface is red, and the flesh is aromatic and flavorful. The peaches are round, with a slightly raised and soft suture, and ripen uniformly. This variety is known for producing many flower buds and consistently good crops.
