Actinidia deliciosa (Elmwood Kiwi)
Elmwood is a later-ripening variety compared to Saanichton, but it typically ripens at our nursery. We harvest the fruit in November. It is a winter food, providing a continuous supply of ripening fruit from November through February. Other fruits ripening during this time include Arkansas Black apples, Russian pomegranates, and both hard and soft persimmons. These fruits pair wonderfully together in fruit salads and dishes for festive occasions.
Elmwood produces large fruit and blooms. In 2010, the vine yielded 200 lbs. of fruit, and in 2011, it produced 260 lbs. The vine is large and requires spur pruning throughout the growing season. The leaves are large and showy. The best trellis for this vine is a T-trellis with a spacing of 15-18 feet between plants. It thrives in Zones 7-9.
