Allium schoenoprasum – Chive

Chives are an easy-to-grow, cold-hardy perennial herb valued for their mild onion flavor and attractive ornamental qualities. The hollow, dark green leaves can be harvested repeatedly throughout the growing season and are excellent fresh in salads, soups, dips, egg dishes, and other culinary uses.

In late spring to early summer, plants produce attractive globe-shaped purple flowers that are edible and highly attractive to pollinators. Chives form tidy clumps that gradually increase in size over time and are well suited for herb gardens, vegetable gardens, borders, and containers.

One of the earliest plants to emerge in spring, chives return reliably year after year. In colder climates, the foliage dies back during winter and reappears with warming temperatures. In warmer regions, plants may remain evergreen and produce growth for much of the year when provided with adequate moisture.
