The Hewes crabapple, also known as the Virginia crabapple, is a USDA hardiness zone 5–9 tree. Fruit: Small, dark green with white and purplish-red dots. Flavor: Crisp, firm, acidic, and astringent. Uses: Primarily for cider, but can also be used for crabapple jelly. Pollination: A good pollinator for other apple trees that bloom mid-season.  Discovered in Virginia in 1817. Keeps well in cold storage. Mature size: 12–16 ft. The Hewes crabapple tree is a cross between a northern American wild crabapple and European varieties. It was a favorite of both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Partly self-fertile.
