Potomac Pear (Pyrus communis)

Introduced in 1993 by the USDA Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville, West Virginia, Potomac is a high-quality European pear prized for its exceptional flavor and outstanding resistance to fire blight. A cross between Moonglow and Anjou, it produces medium to large fruit that ripens in mid-September.
The fruit has smooth yellow-green skin and sweet, buttery, exceptionally juicy flesh, making it an excellent choice for fresh eating. Trees are vigorous, productive, and fairly precocious, producing reliable crops at a young age. Potomac is considered one of the finest fire blight-resistant pears available for home orchards and commercial growers alike.
Potomac requires another European pear variety for cross-pollination. Trees perform best in full sun and well-drained soil. Dwarf trees typically reach 8–14 feet in height, while standard trees grow 15–30 feet tall. Space dwarf trees 6–10 feet apart and standard trees 14 feet apart. Hardy in Zones 5–9.

Actinidia deliciosa 'Saanichton'
The popular store bought Hayward usually is not adapted to East Coast conditions. Saanichton has proven itself at our nursery and is worthy of trial. An attractive vine, one of the prettiest at our nursery with very large passion flower-like blooms and fruit the size of store bought fruits. Ripens 2 weeks earlier than Elmwood. It takes our fluctuating temperatures unlike most fuzzy kiwis. Comes into bearing early, usually 1 to 2 years. A "fuzzy male" must be grown with Saanichton for fruit set. Space 15' apart. Zone 7-9.

Saanichton Fuzzy Kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa 'Saanichton')
Saanichton is one of the best fuzzy kiwi varieties for the eastern United States, where the popular grocery-store Hayward often struggles with fluctuating spring temperatures. This vigorous, attractive vine has proven itself at our nursery, producing large, flavorful fruit comparable in size to store-bought kiwis while offering improved adaptability to East Coast growing conditions.
Among the most ornamental vines we grow, Saanichton produces large, showy white flowers that resemble passion flowers in late spring. The fruit ripens approximately two weeks earlier than Elmwood and develops the sweet, aromatic flavor expected of high-quality fuzzy kiwis. Vines begin bearing at a young age, often producing fruit within one to two years after planting.
For fruit production, Saanichton requires a Fuzzy Male Kiwi for pollination. Plant vines in full sun with well-drained soil and provide a sturdy trellis or arbor for support. Space plants 15 feet apart. Hardy in Zones 7–9.

Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum muticum)
Mountain Mint is a fragrant native perennial found throughout the eastern United States, from Illinois to Florida and west to Texas. Highly valued by pollinators, it produces dense clusters of small white to pale lavender flowers over a long blooming season, providing an important source of nectar for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects during the heat of summer.
Growing 1–3 feet tall, Mountain Mint forms attractive clumps of aromatic foliage with distinctive silvery flower bracts and reddish-tinged stems and leaves. The leaves can be harvested fresh or dried for herbal teas and have a long history of traditional medicinal use. Its upright habit and long-lasting blooms make it an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, native plantings, meadows, rain gardens, and perennial borders.
Mountain Mint thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts to a variety of well-drained soils. Once established, it is drought tolerant, deer resistant, and requires very little maintenance. Hardy in Zones 4–8.
