Violet de Bordeaux Fig
Ficus carica ‘Violet de Bordeaux’ (also known as Negronne)
Violet de Bordeaux is a small, purplish-black fig with rich, strawberry-colored pulp—widely regarded as one of the finest-tasting fig varieties. It is especially popular in the Northwest and Western U.S., thanks to its flavor and manageable size. The tree is naturally dwarf, making it ideal for home gardens.
This variety produces fruit similar in taste to Black Mission figs but is hardier and grows as a smaller tree. Fruit ripens later than that of Hardy Chicago, Marseilles, and Celeste varieties. It has a closed eye, which helps reduce spoilage from pests and moisture. Recommended spacing is an 8-foot circle. Suitable for USDA Zones 7b to 9. In colder climates, winter protection is advised.
