Pyrus communis x – Warren Pear
Warren is an outstanding dessert pear known for its smooth, grit-free texture and rich, buttery flavor. The medium to large, long-necked fruits have pale green skin, occasionally blushed with red. Excellent for fresh eating and a good keeper.
Highly resistant to fire blight, this variety has become a favorite in home orchards. It was discovered by T.O. Warren of Hattiesburg, MS, who found the tree at a USDA test plot near his home. Believed to be a seedling from USDA breeder Dr. Magness’ work in Beltsville, MD, the Warren pear shares its lineage with the Magness pear and has similar disease resistance and fruit quality.
Warren blooms mid- to late-season and is typically harvested in mid-September in central Virginia.
