Morus Macrura

Long red to black fruits of very large size. Up to 5" long, usually around 3". Fruits picked in the ruby red stage are sweet and can be sold to local Markets. Unlike most mulberries Pakistan is not adaptable to different growing regions.

Bud swell is eminent after a few warm days in winter, making them susceptible to winter injury when the cold returns. At our nursery we grow Pakistan between two buildings to keep it in the shade during winter. We've had varied results over the years with usually a small harvest of fruits and a lot of winter damage.

There are places in the US where the plant grows well and the tree is vigorous and productive. Coastal areas of Zone 8, California, and Oregon are choice places for Pakistan.

Leaves are large and heart shaped, glossy and attractive. Our tree has taken single digit temperatures without dying in its protected location. Usually height around 20' to 30' but known to grow as much as 70'. Can be pruned heavily after fruiting to keep the tree to a reasonable size.Winter injury here keeps tree small. Though original cuttings from Islamabad were labeled Morus alba, it is generally recognized as Morus macroura. Imported by Dr. White, USDA Plant Introduction Officer for AJ Bullard of Mount Olive NC and Michael McConkey of Edible Landscaping.
