Morus macroura ‘Pakistan’ Mulberry

The Pakistan Mulberry is famous for its exceptionally long fruit, often reaching 3–5 inches in length, with a rich, sweet flavor. Fruit can be harvested at the ruby red stage for fresh eating or local markets, and becomes darker and even sweeter as it fully ripens.

Unlike many mulberries, ‘Pakistan’ is not widely adaptable and performs best in mild winter climates. It is prone to early bud break during warm winter spells, making it susceptible to cold damage if temperatures drop again. In colder regions, planting in a protected location (such as near buildings or shaded winter sites) can improve survival and productivity.

This variety thrives in coastal Zone 8 regions, California, and parts of Oregon, where it can grow into a vigorous, productive tree. In less ideal climates, growth may be limited due to winter injury, often resulting in smaller trees and lighter crops.

The tree features large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves, adding ornamental value. It can grow 20–30 feet tall (and up to 70 feet in ideal conditions), but responds well to heavy pruning after fruiting to maintain a manageable size.

Originally introduced from Islamabad, this variety—though once labeled Morus alba—is now generally recognized as Morus macroura. It was brought into the U.S. by Dr. White (USDA Plant Introduction) for A.J. Bullard (Mount Olive, NC) and Michael McConkey (Edible Landscaping).
