Diospyros rhombifolia – Princess Bonsai Persimmon
Due to import restrictions, we are unable to ship Persimmon to CA
Princess Persimmon, also known as Lotus Persimmon or Diamond-leaf Persimmon, is a naturally dwarf selection of Diospyros lotus valued for its attractive foliage, small size, and suitability for bonsai. Our trees reach about 7’ tall and 4–5’ wide, although they can be maintained smaller. Glossy, dark green leaves turn yellow in fall, adding ornamental interest.
Small orange fruits ripen in late fall and are not edible when fully ripe. The fruits can be allowed to blet through winter and are usually enjoyed in January–February in Virginia. The tree is generally self-fruitful. Princess Persimmon can spread by producing shoots from the mother plant; these should be removed if a single-trunk specimen is desired.
Princess Persimmon is adaptable to a range of soils but performs best in well-drained soil and full sun. Allow about 6’ of space. It is hardy in Zones 5–9 and, once established, has good drought tolerance. Its naturally compact habit makes it an interesting choice for smaller landscapes, edible gardens, and bonsai.
