Calliope Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana × kaki)

Calliope is a hybrid persimmon combining the cold hardiness and adaptability of American persimmons with the larger fruit size and excellent quality of Asian varieties. The attractive orange fruit is sweet, rich, and flavorful when ripe, with smooth flesh and excellent fresh eating quality.

This vigorous and productive tree is valued for its dependable crops, ornamental beauty, and improved cold tolerance. Glossy green foliage provides a handsome appearance through summer before turning shades of yellow and orange in fall. Fruit ripens in autumn and may persist on the tree after leaf drop, adding ornamental interest.

Calliope performs best in full sun with well-drained soil and adapts well to a wide range of climates. Mature trees typically reach 15–20 feet in height with a similar spread, though pruning can maintain a smaller size. Hardy in Zones 5–9.

Calliope is considered non-astringent to partially astringent, depending on growing conditions and ripeness. Fruit can often be eaten while still firm, developing a sweeter and richer flavor as it softens further.
